Smith positive despite injuries
Tuesday 1st September 2009, 1:07PM BST.
Boss Rob Smith has issued a positive bulletin on AFC Telford United’s two latest additions to the casualty list.
Right-back Lee Vaughan and striker Andy Brown both went off injured during yesterday’s 1-0 victory away to Gloucester City in the Blue Square North.
But the Bucks chief is confident Vaughan will be fit for the visit of Harrogate on Saturday, while he has fingers crossed that Brown’s ribs are not as badly damaged as first feared.
“Vaughany did his groin in the warm-up and had to come off at half-time, but I don’t think it’s too bad,” said Smith.
“Andy Brown hurt his ribs and we need to get him checked out to see if one is broken or anything. He’ll be sore for a few days and we’ll see how we get on.”
Skipper Stuart Whitehead was able to lead the side to a third away win of the season, despite struggling with the knee problem that kept him out for the start of the campaign.
He played alongside loan signing Shane Killock in the heart of defence, with Gavin Cowan consigned to the substitutes’ bench after missing Saturday’s draw with Ilkeston because he was attending his brother’s wedding.
“It’s the first time I’ve left him out and it won’t be for long, because he’s quality,” said Smith. “I thought the lads deserved a chance after Saturday but Gav will be back in soon.
“Stu’s still struggling and you can see he can’t kick the ball properly. He’s not right but it’s not getting any worse.
“He wanted to play yesterday and it’s superb that my skipper has that attitude when he’s carrying an injury.”
Telford’s victory was secured thanks to a fabulous goal from substitute Matt Nolan, though Smith admitted that was the one highlight of another rather flat performance.
But it was still the Bucks’ third clean sheet in a row.
