Drivers face traffic disruption

Tuesday 1st September 2009, 10:50AM BST.

roadworksBusinesses are being warned they could face some disruption because of planned resurfacing works on part of a one-way system in the heart of a south Shropshire town.

Bell Lane in Ludlow will be closed to traffic from October 12 for five days. Diversions will be put in place.

Ludlow councillor Rosanna Taylor-Smith said there may be some disruption for businesses, residents and visitors but the timing of the closure would mean it would not take place during the busy summer season.

She said: “I welcome the resurfacing works for Bell Lane in Ludlow, which I have been calling for for over two years.

“Bell Lane is one of the most heavily used roads in Ludlow, with buses, lorries and cars using it as one of the main routes out of the centre of town.

“The diversion whilst these works are going on is likely to cause some delay.

“It is being carried out in October so it does not cause any disruption to the town in the peak summer season.”

Peter Cook, president of Ludlow’s Chamber of Trade, said: “It is a very busy route and a lot of people do use it. If it’s got to be done then it’s got to be done, but anything that affects businesses in these times is not to be welcomed. I’m glad they’re doing it during a quiet time.”

Ron Buzzacott, Shropshire Council’s traffic manager, said: “Due to the nature of this work a road closure is required to protect the safety of the workforce.”
