Power cut at Shropshire hospital

Saturday 29th August 2009, 12:04PM BST.

Extra staff were drafted in at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital because of a power cut, which also affected more than 51,000 homes.

Patients receiving critical care had to be checked over by the extra staff after the power cut struck at the RHS on Friday night.

Hospital bosses say the power cut, caused by a bird flying into overhead power lines, lasted about 20 minutes but had a ‘major impact’ on the
hospital. Dialysis sessions were also cut short.

Tom Taylor, chief executive of The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust said: “We’d like to reassure everyone that the power was back on at the hospital soon afterwards and all systems appear to be back to normal.”

Are we really expected to believe that a simple bird strike knocked out the main high voltage line to Shrewsbury? What utter nonsense.

These persistent power failures in Shrewsbury are legendary. If this had not affected the RSH it probably would not have received a mention.

The question needs to be asked as to how many other areas of major population loose their supply so frequently? Answer – none.

Now this is something that our MP SHOULD be dealing with, not looking for publicity opportunities.
