buttermarket1Part of a nightclub is to be transformed in a £100,000 refurbishment and another restaurant could be expanded into a wine bar and private members’ club in Shrewsbury.

The Cellars of The Buttermarket in Howard Street will be renamed The Severn Cellars when it reopens under new ownership on September 12 in a move which could create up to 15 new jobs.

Another venue set for an overhaul is Stelgreco, on Castle Foregate.

The Greek Cypriot restaurant could be set to have “new life” breathed into it with plans to create the wine bar and private members’ club, which owners hope will open until 5am,Monday to Saturday.

The Severn Cellars marks a change for Shropshire businessman Mike Philbin who currently runs a fishing pool in Oswestry and a recycling company in Shrewsbury.

Mr Philbin said: “I’ve worked in Shrewsbury all my life and thought I’d like to try this. Fingers crossed we’ve got the backing of local people. The word on the street is the young promoters are going to support us.”

The plans for Stelgreco state that the business is  in “financial decline”. It adds: “The proposal is to regenerate and breath new life into the building.”

Public consultation for the Stelgreco plans will end on September 4.
