Time to graft, Bucks skipper reminds team

AFC Telford UnitedSkipper Stuart Whitehead has called for AFC Telford United to show the graft to match their undoubted quality in the Blue Square North, writes CHRIS HUDSON

The Bucks are regarded as one of the favourites for promotion to the top tier of non-League football and can boast some of the most feared players in the division.

But Whitehead is not satisfied with their return of two wins from the first five games and has called for the team to ‘dig in’ and start grinding out results.

He was encouraged by what he saw in the 1-0 win at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday but has now called for the same commitment every week.

“We’ve always known we’ve got good players who can pass the ball and who have got good quality,” he said.

“But we’ve got to start digging results out and winning games.

“At least we did that at Gainsborough last week – we didn’t show that much quality but we actually competed for one of the first times this season.

“That’s pleasing, because we’ve got to be able to grind out the 1-0ers.

“We’re not going to be great every week and play free-flowing football, but we’ve got to make sure we compete for 90 minutes.”
