police-lights6Detectives hunting a rapist who struck in Telford have arrested a man.

The 32-year-old was arrested this morning, less than 24 hours after police released an artist’s impression of the man responsible for raping the woman on August 11.

The man, who has been arrested on suspicion of rape, is currently in custody at Telford’s Malinsgate police station. Police said he will be questioned in due course.

Chris Ammonds, Telford Police spokesman, said: “The arrest comes after police yesterday released an artist’s impression of the offender to the public and appealed for further assistance in helping to catch the man responsible for this assault.”

The man is the second person arrested in connection with the attack. Another man was arrested on suspicion of rape the day after the attack. He was later released on bail pending further inquiries.

Mr Ammonds said: “Even though they have made this second arrest, the investigating team remain keen to hear from anyone who may have information about this assault.”

The victim, who is in her 20s, is said to be “deeply traumatised” by the attack which happened at about 5pm, as she made her way towards Randlay from Stafford Park, along a footpath between the A442 Eastern Primary and a nearby railway line.

She was just about to cross the red and white pedestrian footbridge over the road when the man struck.
