County soldier Matthew to guard the Queen

Teenage Telford soldier Matthew Cartwright has taken on a new role – guarding the Queen.
Private Cartwright, of the Royal Logistics Corps, will be a member of The Queen’s Guard for four months.
The 18-year-old who joined the Army as a driver, said it was a “considerable honour” to take on the role.
He said: “Guarding the Queen is the most responsibility and discipline you can have.
“It is something I never thought I would get to do, but it feels amazing. It takes real discipline.”
During the four-month tour of duty, his squadron will be responsible for protecting the Royal Family, national landmarks and foreign heads of state, together with ceremonial duties at Windsor Castle, the Tower of London, and St James Palace.
They will also perform the Changing of the Guard ceremony, which takes place every 48 hours and is watched by several thousand people.
Major Stuart Field, officer commanding 22 Close Support Squadron and Captain of The Queen’s Guard for the squadron’s duty tour, said: “Our inclusion in The Queen’s Guard demonstrates the adaptability, and employability, of the RLC soldier.
“It is a great honour to be part of something so ingrained in military tradition and heritage.
“The squadron is very ready for the task though. They have worked very hard and each and everyone had earned their place in The Queen’s Guard.”
Private Cartwright attended Wrockwardine Wood Arts College before joining the Army in January 2008. He is based in Germany, but his mother Sara still lives in Telford.
Army spokeswoman Claire Allen said: “In a move away from tradition, Royal Logistics Corps soldiers have picked up the mantle of guarding the Queen from the guards regiments deployed in Afghanistan.
“Soldiers from 22 Close Support Squadron, who normally provide logistic support to Seven Armoured Brigade in Gutersloh, Germany, took over The Queen’s Guard role on August 10 for four months.”
