AM backs new post office for village

The leader of the Conservatives at the Welsh Assembly has welcomed plans for the restoration of a post office service to Llanymynech.

Nick Bourne, AM for Mid and West Wales and Leader of the Opposition at the Assembly, said it was “wonderful” to know the community will be able to access post office services again after waiting for more than 12 months.

He added: “I very much welcome the news Post Office Limited is proposing to reintroduce services to Llanymynech.

“I am sure local people will fully support this initiative.”

The village has been without a post office since June last year following the closure of the former Ashfield Stores and Post Office.

A campaign was lodged by local politicians and residents for somebody to step in and reopen the shop.

Karl and Jen Bridger, of Llanwddyn, and their 17-year-old son Leo, have now taken over the store and renamed it Llanymynech Village Shop.

The Bridgers have spent four months revamping the store and it is now open. The new shopowners are going to enter a partnership with Llandrinio Post Office to provide postal services, hopefully in three-and-a-half or four months.

The previous shopowners David and Kim Searle were prosecuted by Powys County Council. They admitted failing to keep food premises in good repair, failing to ensure adequate pest control and failing to provide adequate facilities for food hygiene.
