Axed midfielder won’t be sulking
Tuesday 25th August 2009, 12:38PM BST.
Kevin McIntyre believes receiving the Shrewsbury Town axe has given him “a kick up the backside” as he attempts to make himself a permanent fixture in Paul Simpson’s plans.
The 31-year-old was left out of the starting XI for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chesterfield as Simpson freshened things up following a desperate night at Dagenham in their previous outing.
But McIntyre has vowed to display a strong resolve and react well to the personal disappointment.
“After the way we played at Dagenham the manager was always going to make changes,” said the former Macclesfield man.
“It was disappointing but you just have to keep your head down and work hard.
“It is a kick up the backside for me. The manager has got options with the squad we have and the chance to play different formations so it’s up to me to prove I deserve to back in the team.”
McIntyre, who has spent much of his Town career in midfield, has slotted in at left back for the start of this season.
But he insists he is unconcerned about which position he fills.
“I probably prefer midfield because you get more involved there but I played left back for Paul Ince at Macclesfield so I’m comfortable there,” he added.
“It doesn’t really matter – I just want to be in the team.”
Meanwhile, striker Omer Riza was visiting a specialist today for a second opinion on his ankle injury amid concerns it may require surgery.
The problem was initially expected to keep the forward out for eight weeks – but it could now lead to a longer absence.
“It’s not good news at the moment,” said manager Simpson. “It’s going to be a long drawn out thing – possibly eight to 12 weeks.
“There is a chance he may need an operation but we will wait to see what comes.”
