A blaze tore  through a stable block at a Shropshire farm sending flames shooting 20ft into the air.

Twenty stables were destroyed in the fire at Woodhouse Farm in Redhill, Telford, shortly before 10pm yesterday.

Pete Hawkins, watch manager at Telford Central Fire Station, said today: “When we arrived the stable block of 20 stables was fully involved in fire.

“There was a large amount of flames and smoke, which could be seen from the A5 itself. The flames were probably 20ft high.”

He said there was a problem getting water to fight the fire because of a lack of hydrants so a water bowser from Bridgnorth was drafted in.

John Hancock, who owns the farm, said no horses were harmed during the blaze.

He said: “I was awoken by the dog barking and the kids were moving horses from a nearby block away.

“The fire service said the electrics caused it, but we don’t know exactly how yet. I have lost lots of equipment, wheelbarrows, tools, the lot.”

Tamara Petry, who rides at the farm, said she was “devastated” by the fire.

One pump from Telford Central, one from Tweedale, the light pumping unit from Shrewsbury and a support pump were on the scene for about 90 minutes.
