Festivel-goer in attack threat

Monday 24th August 2009, 3:14PM BST.

A reveller leaving the V Festival at Weston Park was threatened with a spanner and taken on a terrifying drive to a cashpoint  after accepting a lift from a man waiting outside the gates.

Police said the 23-year-old man got into the front of the Audi A3 believing it was a taxi when he left the festival at  11.30pm on Saturday – but the driver then asked for money and snatched his  mobile phone.

Police said the driver threatened the victim with a large spanner before driving him to Shifnal and ordering him to withdraw money from a cashpoint in Park Street.

Officers said the victim “deliberately failed” to withdraw any cash and was left outside the bank as the driver sped off with his phone.

And detectives are also keen to trace a woman who was also picked up by the driver.

Detective Sergeant Dave Meyer, of Staffordshire Police, said: “She was picked up on the A5, between Pickmere Island and the Sherrifhales junction, at about 11.30pm, getting into the back of the vehicle.

“After a short period, she demanded to be let out of the car and was released. I would appeal to this woman to contact police. She is described as white, in her mid-20s with long dark hair and spoke with an Irish accent.”

The driver is described as Asian, in his early 20s, and slim with short dark hair with tram lines shaved into the left side.

Mr Meyer appealed for anyone who saw the silver Audi A3 hatchback and the two men outside the cashpoint shortly before midnight, to contact Bridgnorth police on 0300 333 3000.

Police revealed 60 arrests were made and 169 cautions given at the festival.

Carol Evans, Staffordshire Police spokeswoman, said the majority of the arrests were for theft or drug offences, while cautions were given out to those caught in possession of drugs.

As the last of the thousands of revellers packed up and left for home, the clean-up operation also started in earnest today.

More than 300 litter pickers descended on the park and members of the Rotary Club collected unwanted tents to donate in the UK and abroad.
