Checks to combat cowboy traders

Monday 24th August 2009, 12:21PM BST.

building-builders-house-building1Road checks have been stepped up in Powys in a bid to stop rogue traders operating in the county.

Police and county council officials say the move follows a spate of incidents in which “cowboy” operators have offered to do gardening, building and resurfacing work.

Chief Inspector Andy Twigger said officers would do all they could to crack down on the problem.

He said: “Two recent episodes in Kerry, near Newtown, have involved gangs of males taking money from properties under the pretence of doing work, when no work was carried out.

“Operations targeted at rogue traders demonstrate how trading standards professionals, the police and a wide range of other agencies are working together to tackle this blight on local communities.

“This concerted, high-profile co-ordinated action has done much to raise awareness of how people can report any suspicions they may have that rogue traders are operating in their area and how they can protect themselves.”

Councillor Graham Brown, board member for public protection, said: “These gangs use intimidating tactics, banking on the idea that if they have started work, then householders will let them complete it, then charge them extortionate rates for valueless work.”

He urged anyone with co- ncerns to call police on 101.

All they could do?? what can they do??? check if the van/lorry is road worthy, check they are registered as selfemployed, check they are not in reciept of benefits. All the above is what they can do for other agency’s not what they can do for the victim of a rouge trader which is diddly squat. My advice would be do not engage any trader that knocks on your door.
