Housing plan for ex-Tesco site

Saturday 22nd August 2009, 11:40AM BST.

tesco_bags1Fresh plans will be submitted for a major housing development at Shrewsbury’s former Tesco site which has been lying empty for more than two years, it was revealed today.

Shropshire Council said it will lodge plans for the £6 million site it owns in Arlington Way, following a land swop deal between the former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and the supermarket giant in 2007.

It comes after authority leaders today revealed there had been growing interest from developers in purchasing the land.

The site already has planning permission for 101 homes, with hopes for about 35 affordable units. However, since Tesco left the area in Spring 2007 to move to a new £15 million Tesco Extra store in Harlescott it has been left empty.

Two developers have also pulled out of multi-million pound deals to buy the land.

Nigel Ford, council head of estates, said: “We are not currently in negotiations with any developers regarding the former Tesco site in Shrewsbury. We will be submitting a new outline planning application for residential use in the near future.”

Councillor Peter Nutting said: “It’s very early stages before anything is likely to be happening, but there is a little interest in the site.”

The former supermarket was razed in August last year, more than a year after it closed its doors to the public.
