Festival in booze warning
Saturday 22nd August 2009, 12:10PM BST.
Revellers at V Festival have been warned to go easy on the booze after ambulance staff dealt with more 150 people within 24 hours of the gates opening.
Ambulance crews are warning revellers to go steady with alcohol and drink plenty of soft beverages ahead of what is expected to be a hot day tomorrow. A total of 160 people had been treated by 6.30am today.
Staff and volunteers are operating a medical centre for people attending the festival at Weston Park, near Shifnal.
The gates opened at about 8am yesterday.
West Midlands Ambulance Service, St John Ambulance and Venture Medical Services are operating the centre.
Ambulance service spok- esman Chris Kowalik said most people visiting the centre had suffered only minor injuries.
He said: “130 people have been treated by volunteers from St John Ambulance and a further 30 by West Midlands Ambulance Service. These were mostly minor injuries.
“Three people went to hospital; two with fractures sustained from falls; the third had a medical condition unrelated to her visit to the festival and was airlifted by the Midlands Air Ambulance yesterday evening.
“It is estimated about 85,000 people will attend each day; the vast majority of them also camping overnight.”
Crowds were flocking to Weston Park to see acts such as The Killers, Oasis, Lady Gaga, Pete Doherty, McFly and Snow Patrol perform over three stages today and tomorrow.
Mr Kowalik said with the predicted warm weather, people should apply sun cream and drink plenty of soft drinks to fight off dehydration. Organisers were giving away free bottles of water in a bid to keep casualties to a minimum and the event running smoothly.
Mr Kowalik said: “West Midlands Ambulance Service would like to remind everyone attending the ev- ent to take care of themselves to avoid any unnecessary trips to the medical centre.
“It is important festival-goers are sensible with their intake of alcohol and we would advise them to drink plenty of water and soft drinks to avoid dehydration.
“Suncream is a must if the weather is kind. Make sure you eat regularly and wear sensible shoes and clothing to prevent injury or illness caused by the weather.”
