Do we support our farmers?

food_basket1Letter: New information obtained by the Countryside Alliance has shown not even 10 Downing Street can tell how much of food served at the Prime Minister’s official residence is British.

In response to the request for “the proportion of food which was procured by official residences for official functions in the past twelve months and which was domestically produced”, the Cabinet Office (responsible for No.10 Downing Street and Chequers) admitted “There is no information on whether the proportion of food procured in the past twelve months was domestically produced.”

The failure of No. 10 Downing Street to record and monitor the amount of British food being procured for official functions is contrary to recent comments by Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He said if people “want a strong, thriving successful farming industry – if you want to support the industry in Britain – buy British”.

The findings follow Gordon Brown’s statement last year “Everybody knows that British bacon is best”, despite the Cabinet Office, of which the Prime Minister’s residence and office are an “integral part”, had failed to buy any British bacon in 2007-08.

Countryside Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart said: “The Government needs to practise what they preach. It is time for our government to support the countryside in the most simple of ways – by buying British. There is no excuse for key government residences not being able to tell us how much of the food they are procuring and serving at official functions is British.”

It’s not so much of ‘do we support our farmers’ – the issue is, do the government support our farmers, and the answer is – they don’t have the faintest clue. This present ‘administration’ seem to have done eveything to discourage farmers from producing food for our country. Encouraging farmers to diversify by turning valuable land into golf courses and ‘set aside’ is counter productive to farmers and we the consumers. If you want to see how farmers should be treated you do not have to look far. Just cross the Channel and you will see how farmers are respected, properly protected and compensated in France. Ask any farmer in Wales and on the border if they feel respected and appreciated by government. The will tell you how they feel and how poor they are. Adding insult to injury, the way they are treated by supermarket chains it’s a wonder we still have any farmers left in the UK.
It’s time the National Farmers Union stood up for its members and told government what really needs to be done for farmers and consumers alike instead of merely accepting all the costly, ridiculous and pointless legislation meted out from the EU.

How people think about farmers seems to have improved an awful lot over the last few years. 10 years ago they were very unpopular. But with animal welfare being made a priority, the ban on fox hunting and celebrity chefs talking about the need for good British produce, things are on the up. Lets hope the government catch on soon.

Farmers have improved their image. I always try and buy British now.

Super markets could be made to support our farmers more. I don’t mind paying for good quality produce.
