Club link to crime in town
Friday 21st August 2009, 12:00PM BST.
A Shrewsbury nightclub at the centre of a murder investigation is responsible for a tenth of all night-time crime inside the town’s river loop over the past four years, police figures have revealed.
And licensing chiefs said that 70 per cent of all crime incidents in the Raven Meadows area during the period could also be directly linked to the Liquid and Diva nightclub.
The figures were revealed by Tony Mantle, West Mercia Police’s licensing officer, at a review into the premises licence for the club yesterday.
He had requested the review after the death of father-of-two Darren Griffiths, of Harmer Hill, who was injured after a disturbance at the venue in the early hours of June 29 and later died in hospital.
Gerald Gouriet, QC, barrister for the club’s owners Luminar Leisure, told the meeting the club’s designated premises supervisor, who has since been sacked, had failed to accurately log incidents of crime and disorder associated with the club over the past year so bosses were not aware there had been a rise in the number of incidents.
