Theatre to host open day
Thursday 20th August 2009, 6:45AM BST.
Shrewsbury’s £28 million Theatre Severn is set to hold an open day next weekend to celebrate a successful first six months of operations.
The riverside venue will complete its first six months at the end of August and to mark the occasion bosses are opening its doors on August 29 so that visitors can see both the public, front of house areas and also take a walk behind the scenes.
Jan Edmondson, Theatre Severn’s marketing manager, said: “We were delighted by how many people visited us on our first open day in April.
“Since then we have had many requests to repeat the open day and hope that anyone who was unable to come last April will take the opportunity to visit us.
“As our Autumn/Winter season begins on September 1, this will be the last opportunity for people to have a look at what goes on behind the scenes.”
The Theatre will be open between 10am and 4pm.
During the day it will be possible for visitors to explore the building at their own pace, take a look behind the scenes, visit one of the dressing rooms, see the Green Room, walk out onto the auditorium stage and get an appreciation of the latest technical systems available.
They will also be able to visit the Walker Theatre and see the stunning dance studio and both the restaurant and the Chapel Bar will be open.
In its first six months Theatre Severn has already hosted a variety of performances from Pam Ayres and James Morrison to shows such as Blood Brothers, Le Grand Cirque and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
Over the coming months audiences can enjoy productions such as Pentabus’s new show Origins, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Mid Wales Opera’s new production of The Marriage of Figaro, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Alan Ayckbourn’s irresistible Absurd Person Singular as well as The Drifters, Midge Ure, Elkie Brookes, Cabaret and Rambert Dance Company.
For younger audiences there will be a production based on Dick King Smith’s Babe The Sheep Pig.
