Murder case club can open again
Thursday 20th August 2009, 1:59PM BST.
A Shropshire nightclub at the centre of a murder investigation was given the go-head today to reopen, but door staff will have to wear special headcams.
Liquid and Diva in Raven Meadows, Shrewsbury, will also have to extend its CCTV to cover the whole premises and its opening hours will be cut.
A raft of new conditions was imposed on the club by Shropshire Council’s licensing sub-committee today.
The review followed the death of Darren Griffiths, of Harmer Hill, injured after a disturbance at the venue in the early hours of June 29.
Gerald Gouriet, QC, barrister for the club’s owners Luminar Leisure, told the committee that the incident had been treated at the “highest level” within the national company.
He said bosses had been liaising with the police to arrange phased reopenings at the club and had carried out an extensive review.
Mr Gouriet said the firm had come up with a series of suggested conditions for the premises licence including the appointment of a new incident manager to help ensure the safety of clubbers.
Councillor Simon Jones, chairman of the committee, said two additions had been made to the conditions put forward by the club including a ban on the use of the first floor outdoor smoking terrace until written approval by Environmental Health had been obtained.
He said reasonable steps would also have to be taken to recognise the needs of residents and businesses.
Two doormen at the club Neil Stokes, 22, of Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury, and Daryl Brown, 31, of Severn Drive, Wellington, have been charged with murder and have appeared in court.
