Letter: Blast this quarry decision
Wednesday 19th August 2009, 6:59AM BST.
Letter: The decision to blast a further 3,000,000 tons of rock from the heart of Haughmond Hill, near Shrewbury, which is a local beauty spot, is a tragedy.
The American-owned company responsible for the application says it will be used to resurface roads; maybe partly – but the vast majority of it will be used in the continuing concretion of this small island.
There are dozens of quarries nationwide with similar outputs.
Come the next general election, vote for a party which will restrict these big companies’ activities or we will suffer more flooding of homes, etc.

Haughmond Hill a beauty spot????????? matter of opinion realy. It is covered with tree’s that do not harbour much wild life in them or infact beneath them .There is more wild life and beuty in the fields that surround it much of it due to the efforts of game keepers and some farmers.

So you would rather they quarried someone else’s local beauty spot, preferably many miles from where you live?

So we have an existing quarry. It is surrounded by trees and appears quite well away from towns etc.
The quarry wants to extend its license. This safeguards jobs. It provides the materials that create and maintain our world – it may surprise the lteer writer that very little of our nation has been concreted over. In the current climate, very little additional land is being lost. Most construction materials go on repair and maintenance not new build and without this work, the world as we know it would soon grind to a halt – railways closed, motorways closed, housing unfit for use. Recycled material is playing an ever greater part in this story but I can say from first hand experience that Shropshire doesn’t have sufficient or cost effective supplies of recycled building material.
I doubt that is what anyone wants so this has to be a NIMBY letter and a weak one at that.

I can only suggest Mr. E. R. Edwards gived up his home, roads, railways, hospitals and every other part of civilisation and go live in a tent or mud hut if he hates quarrying so much.
