Traffic restrictions still flouted

Now councillors are renewing their call for action to crack down on the motorists in Oakengates who disregard the law.

At last night’s Oakengates Town Council meeting members agreed to invite a police chief to their next meeting to air their concerns.

Hilda Rhodes, Oakengates Town Council’s mayor, said today drivers were continuing to ignore the double yellow lines in Market Street. She said: “We are going to invite the inspector down to put our concerns to him and see what we can do.

“We have had yellow lines put there to stop them parking but they keep parking there. But we don’t want to ruin the trade in Oakengates.

“Drivers park on pavements and on double yellow lines when they should not be there. I think police have been out there one or two times.”

Last month town councillors agreed that a crackdown on illegal parking should be a priority.

I tried to park in Oakengates (designated parking area in main street) last Saturday afternoon and it was hell on earth, in the end I wondered round to the town hall car park and did the rest on foot, most of it is pure laziness on the person(s)concerned who just doesnt want to walk the short distance from the car park.

I regularly donate to the charity shops in Oakengates and when doing so I will park in Market Street for a few minutes to offload heavy bags – I’m not hiking them round from the Co-op! If I’m doing a good turn some consideration should be given to that.

Last time I needed to park in Oakengates there were dozens of available spaces in the excellent free car park near the theatre, Market Street was all of a minute’s walk away. Loading and unloading is perfectly acceptable, but parking on double yellows is lazy and selfish.
