Simpson hopes for positive result

paul-simpson-43Manager Paul Simpson has urged his Shrewsbury Town side to “be positive” as they aim to topple free-scoring Dagenham & Redbridge tonight.

Town make their second trip to the south east in four days as they take on a Dagenham team full of confidence after winning both their League Two games to date – and firing five past Torquay on Saturday.

But Simpson has been delighted with his team’s start, and is seeking to cap an excellent few days on the road with maximum points tonight.

“If we could come through the game still unbeaten that would be a bonus, but I want to get a win,” said the Town boss.

“If we could do that it would really set us up for a home game on Saturday (against Chesterfield) so we want to be positive.

“It’s a big challenge because Dagenham will be delighted with the way they have started the season. They have had changes over the summer but they don’t seem to have been affected so far.

“But I’ve been pleased with the way we have gone about it in the first three games – the football we have been playing, the chances we are creating and the way we are committed to defending.”

Town have no fresh injury worries as they prepare to come up against summer transfer target Paul Benson, who rejected a move to the Prostar Stadium because of personal reasons after the two clubs had agreed a fee.

The game is sure to rekindle memories of last season, when Town pipped the Daggers to a play-off spot with a 2-1 final day victory at Victoria Road.

Meanwhile, former England manager Glenn Hoddle was at the Prostar Stadium yesterday.

A team from Hoddle’s Academy – based in Spain for players released by English clubs – took on a Shrewsbury youth side boosted by first team squad members Steve Leslie, Harry Hooman, Andre Gray, Jake Simpson and Andreas Arestadou.

Hoddle’s Academy ran out 2-1 winners.

  • England under 19s will be returning to the Prostar Stadium on September 8 when they play Russia. On their previous visit, England ran out 2-1 winners over Holland.
