Driver killed in A5 smash
Monday 17th August 2009, 10:31AM BST.
A woman has died and three other people have been injured following a collision between a car and a van towing a caravan on a Shropshire road.
The crash happened on the A5 near Nesscliffe, between Oswestry and Shrewsbury, close to the junction for Yeaton and Shrawardine, at about 4.10pm on Saturday.
A blue Volkswagen Polo travelling towards Shrewsbury collided with a red Mercedes Vito van towing a caravan and travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Polo, a woman believed to be in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three people in the Mercedes, a man and two women, were taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.
The road was closed for more than five hours.
Inspector Simon Lewis of West Mercia Police, said: “We are keen to hear from anybody who might have seen the collision take place or who might have witnessed the manner of driving by either vehicle involved immediately beforehand.”
Elsewhere, a man on a motorcycle believed to be in his 40s had to be airlifted to hospital with a serious head injury after the bike he was riding was involved in a collision with a van in Telford Road, Bridgnorth, on Saturday, at about 10.30am.
Three people were also taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, following a crash involving two cars on the A49 at Prees Green just before 9.30am yesterday.
Two men in their 20s and a man in his 50s were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Police are still to name a man in his 30s who died on Thursday following a two-car smash on the A5112 Bage Way in Shrewsbury.
