Bridgnorth hoping for Twenty20 final vision
Saturday 15th August 2009, 12:22PM BST.
Bridgnorth will hope to revel in the role of the underdog when they attempt to upset the Birmingham League form book on Sunday.
The Cricket Meadow side have pulled off a host of upsets in the Shropshire qualifiers of the Twenty20 Challenge Cup, including bridging a three-division gap to defeat last year’s overall champions Shrewsbury in the area final.
That shock success booked the division three side a place in Birmingham League’s finals day at Wolverhampton tomorrow, where they will face three teams from a higher division.
Premier division Walmley and Moseley will begin as favourites, while the line-up is completed by current division two leaders Wombourne – but Bridgnorth are excited about their day in the limelight.
“It’s a big occasion for the club and I believe quite a few people are planning to travel to Wolverhampton to watch,” said team manager Ray Perry.
“The lads have done very well to get to finals day and hopefully we can perform as we can.
“There is no pressure on us. We can enjoy the day and we have done well at Twenty20 this year. It seems to suit us so who knows?”
Bridgnorth will take a 12-man squad to Wolverhampton and have purchased special coloured clothing.
But they will have to wait their chance to take to the field as they are involved in the second semi-final.
The day begins at 10am with Walmley taking on Wombourne before Bridgnorth pit their wits against Moseley at 1pm. The two winners then go head-to-head in the final at 4.15pm.
