Simpson facing selection dilemma

Friday 14th August 2009, 11:32AM BST.

paul-simpson-42Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson is preparing to pass judgment on his first selection issues of the season as Town hit the road for the first time tomorrow.

Early-season injuries and unavailability have limited Simpson’s options during the opening two games of the campaign.

But tomorrow’s trip to Barnet will see Steve Leslie return from a suspension held over from last season and Joss Labadie back available after the on-loan midfielder was ruled out of Tuesday’s Carling Cup tie with Ipswich at the request of parent club West Brom.

Striker Kris Bright also comes into the reckoning for the first time in a League game after his international clearance was received earlier in the week.

“This will be the first time that I have had to make a decision,” said Simpson.

“There will be players disappointed they are not in the squad of 18, and players disappointed they are not in the 11 – but that is something they have to deal with.

“We will hopefully pick a team to get a result at Barnet and then look ahead to Dagenham on Tuesday.”

Tomorrow’s game at Underhill gives Town an early opportunity to improve on the dreadful away form which dogged much of last season, including a 20-run winless sequence on the road.

“We are going into it with a different set of players and a different mindset to what we had last year,” added Simpson.

“The only away form we have to go on this season is (the friendly) at Tranmere where we performed well while the squad was still bedding down.

“We know tomorrow will be tough and that Barnet have got good attacking players – but we are a good team with good players ourselves.”
