Man dies after road smash

Friday 14th August 2009, 3:10PM BST.

A man in his 30s has died after a two-car smash which left a busy Shropshire road closed for almost three hours.

The man, who has not been named, died following the collision between two saloon cars on the A5112 Bage Way, between the A458 Haycock Way Roundabout and the Crowmere Road Roundabout in Shrewsbury, just before 7pm yesterday.

He was driving a grey Rover 214 towards Monkmoor when it was involved in a collision with a gold-coloured Volvo XC70 travelling in the opposite direction towards Old Potts Way.

Richard Ewels, Shrewsbury police spokesman, said the victim was certified dead at the scene by paramedics and is believed to be from the Shrewsbury area.

Suzie Fothergill, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, said a second motorist involved in the crash was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be serious.

The road was closed in both directions until 9.40pm.

Inspector Martyn Barnes, of West Mercia Police, said: “There has been a two-car crash on Bage Way in Shrewsbury and unfortunately it’s been confirmed     as a fatal road traffic collision.

“A man in his 30s has died and accident investigators have been to the scene.”

He said police were first alerted to the crash shortly before 7pm.

Two fire crews from Shrewsbury attended and released one person from their vehicle using cutting equipment.

A report on the incident will be prepared for the Coroner for Mid and North Shropshire Mr John Ellery.

Meanwhile, three men were cut free from the car they were travelling in after it collided with a lorry on the M54 in Telford this morning.

The men were all taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, suffering minor neck and back injuries.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: “At 5.30am a Volkswagen Golf and a lorry were involved in a collision on the M54 eastbound at junction four near Shifnal.

“The lorry driver was not injured.”
