Allied Carpets stores shut
Friday 14th August 2009, 10:42AM BST.
More than 140 Allied Carpets stores were shut today – including two in Shropshire – as the firm’s administrator admitted defeat in its bid to save the chain.
About 850 jobs have been axed, including six at Telford Bridge Retail Park, Telford, and six at Sundorne Retail Park, Shrewsbury, as administrator BDO Stoy Hayward said it had been unable to sell on the bulk of the flooring firm’s branches amid fears over tough trading.
However, BDO assured Shropshire customers left waiting for carpets and other flooring that it was making progress to honour the order books of the closed stores.
BDO said it was making good progress finishing the orders, with 16,000 of 21,000 fulfilled so far, and aims to ensure all are completed eventually.
The future of another 120 jobs hangs in the balance as 20 outlets remain in administration, while 55 stores have been sold to a firm set up by Clive Hutchings, ex-Allied chief executive.
Dermot Power, from BDO, said he remained hopeful of selling on the remaining trading stores and said it was also in negotiations over closed store premises.
