Warm spell forecast for show crowd
Thursday 13th August 2009, 11:05AM BST.
Visitors to the 122nd Shrewsbury Flower Show are being urged to dress for warm weather – but take an umbrella just in case.
Organisers are putting the finishing touches to this year’s show which opens tomorrow morning in The Quarry.
Weather forecasters are predicting warm and wet weather and high humidity levels for the duration of the two-day extravaganza.
Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said today: “We are still in the middle of a pretty dreadful summer and even the statistics say it’s been awful.
“But tomorrow it will be mostly cloudy with some spots of rain but also quite warm, humid and breezy. On Saturday it starts off quite warm after a warm night.
“It will be cloudy, muggy and humid but still breezy on Saturday. But there will be some rain moving across Shropshire on a cold front later in the afternoon.”
Organisers are billing this year’s show as the perfect tonic for cash-strapped families.
Shropshire Horticultural Society chairman Mike Carver said he hopes the show can provide 12 hours of non-stop entertainment for families on a budget.
He said the attractions include show-jumping, motorcycling, gymnastics, dog display team, military bands and choirs.

Oh no! I’m working at the show and john warner says it will be warm with a small chance of rain. That means we can expect arctic conditions with torrential rain!

Who goes to this show anyway? It’s exactly the same every year.
I’d rather we didn’t have T’Pau or the Flower Show, both are noisy, disruptive wastes of time. After yet another August with the public denied access to the Quarry as it fills up with Flower Show tat, we now have fireworks shaking the building as I type. Just had to listen to ‘Land of My Fathers’ as well.

Hey, like just for a change? If this is Mike Carver’s idea of ‘entertainment’ then I’m afraid the Flower Show needs a bit of a revamp. The elderly who go every year might enjoy it, but they ‘aint going to be around to keep the money coming in forever. Sorry but gynamstics and a dog display team make it sound more like an over-sized village fete than a 12 hour bonanza of family entertainment. Oh and do you mind not revving those bikes quite so loud please, the town centre residents association are trying to sleep.
