Talks on housing scheme planned

building-builders-house-buildingWorried residents in a north Shropshire village were due to hold crunch talks with council highways bosses today in a bid to put the brakes on a controversial development.

Villagers in Harmer Hill will meet with highways officers from Shropshire Council to discuss plans for 18 homes off Lower Road.

The meeting was called ahead of a Shropshire Council planning meeting next week where councillors will decide whether to grant planning permission for the scheme.

Phil Wilkinson, who is spearheading the campaign, said villagers were worried about the impact such a large number of houses would have on the area, and also concerned about traffic problems.

He said people were worried the development would make Lower Road too busy and dangerous for pedestrians.

“Lower Road is a single carriageway with passing places, no kerb, blind bends and exits onto the A528 Ellesmere Road at a junction already identified as a problem with existing traffic levels,” he said.

“A greatly increased volume and flow of traffic along a substantially inadequate road will be a serious risk to the safety of all who use it; particularly schoolchildren who have to walk along Lower Road to the only bus stop at the junction.”

Laura Owen, for Shropshire Council, said the plans were due to be discussed next Tuesday.
