ambulance_staffA 22-year-old farm worker was airlifted to hospital after his leg became trapped and was crushed in agricultural machinery near Shrewsbury.

Firefighters and paramedics had to release the man from a potato harvesting machine following the accident in a field at Forton Heath near Montford Bridge yesterday.

The man, who has not been named, suffered crush injuries and he was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Murray MacGregor, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said crews arrived at the field just after 4pm.

He said: “We sent a land ambulance and an incident support officer. The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford was also at the scene.

“The patient, a local man, had got his leg trapped in the rollers of a potato harvester.

“He suffered injuries to his lower right leg and was given pain relief.

“We worked with the fire service to release him before he was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital,” he added.

A member of staff from the farm, who did not wish to be identified, said it was thought the patient had fractured his leg.

He said: “He is alright and the air ambulance was only called because the field is difficult to get to.

“The fire service had to use gear to prise open two pieces of metal which had trapped his leg.”
