Funeral of PoW veteran
Tuesday 11th August 2009, 11:59AM BST.
The funeral of a Mid Wales war veteran who witnessed the horrors of Auschwitz has been held.
About 100 people attended the funeral of Charlie Evans, 92, of Lugg Views in Presteigne, yesterday.
The former Royal Welch Fusilier, who was shot during the allied evacuation, was one of hundreds of British prisoners of war taken to Auschwitz where he saw the atrocities committed by the Nazis.
A bugle, presented to Mr Evans last summer to honour his contribution to the war, was placed on his coffin at yesterday’s service in Presteigne then given to his old regiment’s museum in Caernarfon castle.
But his lifelong friend Douglas Jones, also a former serviceman, said more should have been done to recognise Mr Evans before he died on July 31.
Mr Jones, 85, said: “I don’t think enough was done for him and I’m very disappointed in the lack of interest shown during his life.”
