Burner plans on meeting agenda

Tuesday 11th August 2009, 10:33AM BST.

kawczynski1Shrewsbury’s MP is to meet with waste bosses and leaders from the main political parties in the county over controversial plans to build a £60 million incinerator in Shrewsbury.

Daniel Kawczynski said he would be meeting with Donald Macphail, managing director of Veolia Environmental Services, the firm behind the incinerator plan for Battlefield, on August 20.

Councillor Keith Barrow, leader of Shropshire Council, has also been invited to the meeting at Veolia’s Shrewsbury office, with leaders of the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties in the county.

Mr Kawczynski said the incinerator was the “number one issue” among constituents.

The MP said he had organised the meeting to discuss alternatives to the incinerator and give all of the parties a chance to voice their concerns and ask questions about the plans which have been heavily criticised by councillors, residents and environmental groups.

Mr Kawczynski said:“I’ve been led to believe Veolia is prepared to discuss alternatives which would involve disposing of waste in a greener way.

“I’m extremely keen to find an alternative to the incinerator and I would like my constituents to know we sat down and considered the alternatives.”

Donald Macphail, MD of Veolia Environmental Services in Shropshire, said: “We will be explaining to Mr Kawczynski that an energy from waste facility is just one part of the waste strategy.”

Hopefully it will not be a classic case of Cave-in-ski to Veolia and Shopshire CC’s waste cowboys.

Shropshire needs an MBT/AD,Autoclave or Plasma Gas alternative for converting efficienty this 70,000Tpa; hot skyfilling it with barely 20% energy efficiency. With the alternatives we talking 60%+

Like everything else the public don’t want, it will go ahead. There seems to be an aspiration for future Shrewsbury to become an attractive cosmopolitan mini-city, a hub, jewel in the Shropshire crown. With its picture perfect looks, plans for regeneration and higher education provision it really had a shot at stretching its provincial town legs, wave that goodbye.
