Tramway group’s heritage booster
Monday 10th August 2009, 10:58AM BST.
Enthusiasts behind plans to develop a tourist tramway near Oswestry were celebrating today after their group was accepted as a member of an influential national organisation which represents heritage railways and museums.
Members of the Glyn Valley Tramway Trust said its election to the Heritage Railway Association was a significant step in a bid to restore the tramway which used to run from Chirk to Glyn Ceiriog.
They said membership of the body would open up more funding sources.
Trust spokesman David Cooper said: “We are delighted to be elected as members of the association. It is a massive boost.
“Being a member gives us more public recognition and when we start looking for grant funding both in the UK and abroad it gives us greater stature. It will open doors to funding which otherwise would not be accessible.
“Membership gives us extra clout because it shows we have met the criteria of this prestigious body.”
The group hopes its plans will bring in thousands of tourists and celebrate the history and heritage of industry in the area.
A celebration is to be held on Friday to mark the group’s membership of the national association and also to celebrate that more than 100 people have signed up as members of the group.
The event will be held at the Golden Pheasant in Llwynmawr.
