Letter: Hungry and not lovin’ it
Monday 10th August 2009, 6:00AM BST.
Letter: Firms are struggling and unemployment is rising, but still some businesses are evidently doing so well that they can afford to be astonishingly picky about their customers.
A young man recently visited the Tesco 24-hour store in Telford. He went there after midnight because he was waiting for money to go into his bank account and he urgently needed some groceries.
There were no buses and he had no car, but he lived locally and so he walked there. Leaving Tesco, he called at the nearby McDonald’s restaurant. It was closed, but the drive through was open all night and except for a van in front of of him, the place was deserted.
He tried to purchase something to eat, but the counter assistant refused to serve him – because he wasn’t in a car! Health and safety lunacy, “jobsworth” staff or just plain bonkers? Hmmm, that’s a tough one!

Should have done what Larry in “Curb your enthusiasm” did when confronted with the same problem – stood at the entrance to the drive-in lane with his thumb out and hitched a lift to the serving hatch. Had to wait for half an hour though, with several cars ignoring him before someone stopped to pick him up. Hilarious!

Well it is an unhealthy option , but is all rather silly jobsworth rubbish dreamed up by some oik sat at a desk doing little for their money.

Well that is unbelieable…do people get treated the same if they go to a serving hatch at a 24 hr garage…as for mac donalds. they should be banned for late night opening due to mac rubbish being thrown out of car windows littering the highways…

my son works at this store
and the reason the staff will not serve anyone on foot at the drive thru is because anyone found doing this will be sacked
reason being if the person on foot was hit by a car that said person would most probally try and sue Mcdondals
so yes i can understand you might not be happy you wasnt served but if you was the on the drive thru window you wouldnt risk losing your job either.

OMG, just what next? Will this person want to stand in car wash with a bottle of shower gel?
Honestly *tut*

I understand Angie’s point, but McDonalds should cater for the dumbest customer and have a sign stating that pedestrians will not be served – or better yet, have an order and pickup facility for pedestrian customers who wish to visit the drive through when the restaurant itself is closed. It’s a franchised store at Wellington and I think if it were mine, I’d want to facilitate as much custom as I could. I’d certainly put the idea to MacDonalds HQ.

so…there are people there, cooking – why can’t the restaraunt be open for people on foot to go in and eat?
