Cleared doctor back in county
Monday 10th August 2009, 4:00PM BST.
A doctor formerly accused of being involved in the London and Glasgow bomb plots is working in Accident and Emergency at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, it was confirmed today.
Mohammed Asha, 28, who was cleared of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions after the 2007 terror bids, had worked at the hospital until August 2006.
At the time of his arrest, in June 2007, Dr Asha was working at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent.
But last week he returned to the RSH to complete his training as a junior doctor after the Government dropped a bid to deport him, despite previously maintaining he was a threat to national security.
Tom Taylor, chief executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, said today: “Dr Mohammed Jamil Asha is a very capable young doctor and we are pleased he is continuing his training in our hospitals.
“It is important to remember he has been proven innocent and the Government had withdrawn its application for deportation before he returned to the trust.
“Clearly it would be discrimination if he was not allowed to continue his training. I sincerely hope our patients and visitors will judge him on the basis of his medical skills.”
Dr Asha is working on “rotation”, which means working in a variety of departments across the trust, which includes Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital.
Adrian Osborne, trust spokesman, said: “He is currently on rotation in A&E, but as a junior doctor in training he will undertake rotation in different departments to gain the skills and experience needed in the NHS.”
Dr Asha was arrested on the day of the Glasgow bomb attack and spent more than a year on remand before being cleared by a jury at Woolwich Crown Court of conspiracy to murder and cause explosions. Iraqi doctor Bilal Abdulla was jailed for 32 years for conspiracy to murder.
