Natural death is recorded

Friday 7th August 2009, 11:30AM BST.

Charlotte Hartey from Oswestry A 16-year-old Shropshire girl who was originally said to be suffering from swine flu but was later diagnosed with tonsillitis died from natural causes, a post mortem has confirmed.

But ongoing tests are continuing to establish exactly what caused Charlotte Hartey’s death.

Charlotte, from Quinta, Weston Rhyn, near Oswestry, died last Friday at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

She had been diagnosed with having swine flu and her family said she had been treated for it. But doctors at the hospital later said she had tonsillitis and went on to develop blood poisoning.

A spokeswoman for the coroner’s office said a post mortem was carried out yesterday.

She added: “The deputy coroner Mr Anthony Sibcy has been issued with a natural cause of death by the pathologist.

“Further tests are ongoing.”

She said the cause of death meant there would be no inquest on Charlotte.

Jo Chambers, chief executive of Shropshire County Primary Care Trust (PCT), said they were still working with the hospital and GP practice.
