Up to 45 jobs may be axed at plant

Up to 45 jobs could be axed at engineering giant Doncasters in Shropshire, bosses revealed today.

Staff at Doncasters Aerospace Components, in Shrewsbury, were told when they went on shift last night that the posts were being lost due to difficult trading conditions.

The company, which machines and makes components for the aerospace industry at its Whitchurch Road headquarters, currently employs 431 full-time staff.

General manager John Patterson said: “Trading conditions continue to be tough in the global aerospace and industrial gas turbine markets and we have recently seen significant volumes of high value work being pushed back into 2010 or even 2011.

“With this in mind, and in the context of the wider economic environment, it is important that we take all steps necessary to secure the long-term success of the business.

“This is understandably a difficult time for all our employees and we will be doing everything we can to provide practical support for those affected.”

He added that where possible Doncasters hoped to make reductions through voluntary redundancies and the leadership team would be liaising closely with the Unite union throughout the consultation process.

The Doncasters Group, which employs more than 5,400 globally, is a leading international manufacturer of engineering components.
