Organisers of one of the county’s oldest shows – a “super showcase” of Shropshire agriculture – said they were confident of welcoming more than 20,000 people through the gates today.

Burwarton Show bosses said they were particularly pleased with the weather, which saw the showground near Bridgnorth, bathed in sunshine, and with the crowds arriving at the show early today.

Last year organisers battled against the wet weather and they were forced to cancel it in 2007 due to heavy rain.

Ken Vine, show chairman, said: “We are delighted to be blessed with such wonderful weather.”

Show bosses said they were overwhelmed with the early turnout, with more than 5,000 people through the gates by 10am.

Richard Yates, show vice-chairman, said: “We had a hard time setting up the show this year. We battled against the elements, but now the sun is shining at last.

“The crowds were flocking in early on and while we often talk about hitting the magic 20,000 attendance mark, I think we will have hit it today.

“However, most of all it is a super showcase of Shropshire agriculture.”

Trade stand holders travelled from across Britain to attend the one-day show.

Margaret Robinson, who runs Mawley Milk, Mawley Town Farm, Cleobury Mortimer, said the company was enjoying “a super day” selling its milkshakes.

“It was a bit hair-raising setting up and dealing with the original demand, but we are delighted to be here,” she said.

“Our milkshakes are all made at the farm and we were busy from when the show opened.”

Events were taking place throughout the day, with main ring entertainment including The Kangaroo Kid; Ye Olde Redtail falconry display and the Paws For Thought dog display team.

Reg Jones, from Llanerfyl, said: “I’ve come all the way from Mid Wales because this show is so enjoyable.”
