Mother’s horror at finding home raided

Wednesday 5th August 2009, 9:45AM BST.

A mother-of-three from Telford has spoken of her horror at returning home to find her house had been burgled.

Sharon Barratt said she could not sleep after the break-in, which saw laptops and jewellery taken.

Miss Barratt, of Cornflower Grove, Ketley, said she had been out with her children for the day, but returned home to find their patio door smashed in.

“I have lived in Ketley for 11 years now and never had any issues,” she said.

“I had taken the children out for the day as the weather looked good. We arrived home at 3pm to find the gate was open. Straight away I knew this was a bit odd.

“I told the children to stay in the car, although my 10-year-old son got out and followed me round the back of the house to find the patio door totally smashed. He went hysterical.”

She said the thieves had taken laptop computers belonging to her 10-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter, as well as jewellery. She said they had put the items into a navy nappy bag and fled.

Miss Barratt said today she has been unable to sleep in the house she shares with her partner since the incident on Monday.

“It is not so much what they have taken, but more that they have been in my house,” she said.

“I couldn’t sleep last night because of it and my children were the same, just thinking someone had been in our bedrooms.

“If anybody does know who did this horrible thing to us or has been offered the laptops or jewellery, please get in touch with the police so they can get the punishment they deserve.

“This is our home they have been in. I should feel safe to go out with my children. I am always very careful of locking doors and windows and drawing curtains when I go out.

“Now these people have made us feel so unsafe in our own home, I don’t even want to go out now.”

She added Ketley people need to take more care of their homes at the moment.

Denise Wakefield, Telford police spokeswoman, said: “We are appealing for anybody with information to call the police on 0300 333 3000.”
