These cute furry animals were rescued from the brink of death after being abandoned and left to die next to a Shropshire riverbank.

Ever since being discovered by the most unlikely saviour in a Rottweiler dog, the dozen flea and worm-riddled kittens have certainly given staff at Abbey Veterinary Centre paws for thought.

They were found on Monday by a passer-by whose dog alerted him to the kittens, which had been placed inside a taped-up cardboard box with no food or water just yards from the river.

Alison Littlehales, veterinary nurse at Abbey Vets in Holywell Street, Shrewsbury, said it was a miracle the inquisitive bunch of felines did not drown or die of starvation.

She said: “They were found by the rivers edge by a gentleman’s dog. The man took them home and gave them food and water before bringing them to us the next day. They were riddled with fleas and worms but we have treated them all and they are all thriving now.

“The kittens are being kept in our kennels and they are let out and just rampage everywhere. It’s very secure in case we get any escapees but they are delightful.”

The kittens are thought to belong to two separate litters as they range in age from about six weeks to nine weeks old.

Mrs Littlehales said the kittens were different colours – some black and white, all black, ginger and white and even a tortoiseshell one.

Some of the kittens have already found homes but anybody interested in adopting any of the remaining ones can call the centre on (01743) 232713.

I cant believe how sick some people can be. All they have to do is ring the RSPCA or the vets if they dont want them. There are plenty of people out there who love animals and would give them a much better home.

People who do this type of thing should be banned from ever having animals!!!!!

I totally agree with the above comments there are some nasty people out there and should be prosecuted. It’s also very positive to see a good news story about Rottweilers it’s a really miss under stood breed

Although I have to agree with the previous comments about how some people treat animals, I felt that I would like to say a great big Thank You to the chap who found these little darlings and rescued them, people such as yourself prove that there are still a few decent caring folk about. Hats off to you Sir.

You can’t just ring the RSPCA they tell you there is a waiting list for this kind of help, you can’t ring your vet and ask them to even give you medication to help your pet without paying for an expensive consultation. I don’t agree with what this person has done but i can see why it happened.

Sare – although you may be right in saying RSPCA and vets cannot help, there is never excuse or even reasoning to dump any animal – it is wrong morally and legally. There are aways options, firstly advertise them for sale or even to a good home, secondly there is the Cat Protection League and the PDSA. We have just re-homed 2 kittens from CPL and you even get a voucher towards cost of neutering and chipping.

There is no excuse for this behaviour toward animals – even if the RSPCA and your vet can’t take unwanted animals off your hands if you’re that desperate you could still leave them where they would be found quickly and most likely be taken in by someone if only for a short period – there can be no excuse for leaving them to die

Did i say these people should be excused, i just pointed out that saying you can always go to the RSPCA or your vet is not correct. I ended up taking in a dog that had been dumped, couldn’t find the owner so rang the RSPCA. They were no help. Asked my vet and a few others around the town. They wouldn’t help. They wanted to charge me for an examination and wouldn’t give medication without one. I couldn’t find anyone to take this dog in. I ended up contacting the Labrador rehoming center online and eventually after weeks of waiting someone came to get the dog. So i was just saying i see the reason for animals getting dumped, it’s not easy to find help and some heartless people might take the easy option.

Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, but, stray dogs have to (legally) be reported to police and/or local council. Either/or will take the dog away to be either repatriated or forwarded onto a centre for re-homing. You should never be put in a situation where you have to keep the dog.

Kittens/cats slightly different as there is no requirement to report them, but as said previously one of PDSA/RSPCA/CPL would take them.
