Jobs could be saved at firm

Almost 100 jobs could be saved at a Shropshire newspaper and magazine distribution firm after a buyer was found for the threatened company.
Dawson News was thrown into turmoil and 97 jobs put at risk in April when it lost high-profile contracts with the likes of News International, which publishes The Sun and The Times.
But after going into administration yesterday Dawson News, which previously distributed many of the area’s national newspapers and magazines, was bought by Smiths News.
The 97 employees who had been facing the axe included management, clerical staff, warehouse operators and drivers at the branch in March Way on the Battlefield Enterprise Park in Shrewsbury.
Back in April Dawson News, which had branches across the UK, said 2,800 jobs were at risk nationally because of difficult trading conditions for the newspaper industry amid the recession.
In a statement, Smiths News said that the firm had taken “emergency action” to safeguard the supply of newspapers and magazines in Shrewsbury.
The statement said: “In order to safeguard jobs and avoid a damaging breakdown in supplies to retailers and consumers, an emergency agreement was reached with the administrator.”
