Doubt over flu tragedy
Tuesday 4th August 2009, 2:40PM BST.
A Shropshire family was today waiting to find out what caused the death of their daughter days after she was diagnosed with swine flu.
Charlotte Hartey, 16, died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on Friday after being treated for the virus.
However, her family, who are from Quinta, Weston Rhyn, near Oswestry, have said that there was some doubt over the diagnosis.
They were today waiting to find out if she had the infection. A post mortem examination was due to be carried out today.
The popular Oswestry School pupil was the daughter of Karl and Helen Hartey and had a brother, Tristan. Mr Hartey is the managing director of Applewood Wealth Management, based in Salop Road, Oswestry.
A tribute group has been set up on the social networking site, Facebook, and already has more than 500 members.
On the Facebook site, Charlotte’s brother Tristan, a student at the University of Leeds, said his sister was diagnosed with swine flu on Wednesday last week.
But he claims it was a misdiagnosis and she never had swine flu and was given the wrong drugs.
He said: “She appeared to be getting better. We then took her into hospital on Wednesday and she was diagnosed with tonsillitis.
“Because she had been treated for a viral disease when it was bacterial it got worse.
“This eventually led to septicaemia – blood poisoning – at 5am on Friday she was rushed into the operating room. This gave her a few extra hours. She passed away at about 9.15am.”
But Mathew James, from the Shropshire County Primary Care Trust, today said: “Shropshire County Primary Care Trust and The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust are currently not aware of any deaths in Shropshire County where swine flu has been confirmed at the time of death or is mentioned on a death certificate.
“However, one case at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is currently being reviewed where swine flu may have been a contributory factor.”
Mr Niall Lambkin, senior master at Oswestry School, said: “She will be sorely missed by everyone.”
