The British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra

The British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will be performing in Shropshire next month  to celebrate an anniversary.

Party In The Park, at Cremorne Gardens in Ellesmere, has been organised to mark the 90th anniversary of Save The Children, and the achievements of its locally born founder Eglantyne Jebb.

The ticket-only event, on September 5, is being backed by two well-known local businesses, Fullwood and Tudor Griffiths Group. Two hours of light classical music, featuring a series of guest soloists, will be followed by a huge firework display over the beautiful setting of the Mere. Gates open at 6.30pm and the music starts at 7.30pm.

Save the Children was founded 90 years ago by Ellesmere-born Eglantyne Jebb, who recognised an injustice and decided to fight for the rights of children.

Since 1919 the charity has been raising funds to provide relief to children suffering the effects of war, famine and poverty and in its 90th anniversary year, it is doubling its efforts to help children.

The concert’s organisers said: “While children’s universal human rights are yet to be realised, Eglantyne’s achievement put them on the world agenda, a powerful testament to her rare combination of personal courage, eccentric charisma, and humane vision.”

Young entrepreneur Louis Barnett, of Bridgnorth-based confectionery firm Chokolit, is a Save the Children ambassador and will be one of the guests on the night.

He said: “We at Chokolit do all we can to help raise funds and awareness of this very worthy cause by donating funds from some of our bars, including the launch of an innovative bar, which will directly raise funds for Save the Children, at this special event.”
