Simpson seeks three new faces

Monday 3rd August 2009, 11:56AM BST.

paul-simpsonnewerShrewsbury Town boss Paul Simpson is hoping to add three new faces to his squad in the coming days.

Simpson said he was in talks with two players – with the possibility that deals could be sealed by the close of business today.

And he is also hoping to sign New Zealand international Kris Bright, who played in Saturday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Tranmere, ahead of Saturday’s first League game of the season against Burton Albion.

Simpson said: “I’ve been given the okay to bring a player in today. We’ve agreed a fee and there’s another player who I’m hopeful of getting, so there could be two new faces in the next 48 hours.

“We need to assemble a squad that can take us through the whole season. We had to call up four first year professionals to make up the 16 for the Tranmere game.

“Although they’ve done very well, we’re aiming for seasoned pros who know what it’s all about to come in and take this club forward.”

He said the pair he was in talks with were in addition to Bright, who impressed against Tranmere where he played under the pseudonym “Trialist”.

Afterwards, Simpson said: “I was really impressed with the trialist. I’ll need to speak to the player and his agent to see what their thoughts are and what they want to do.

“I thought he held the ball up well, he showed some good touches and had good awareness about his play. He could be a handful, so hopefully we can keep hold of him.”

Bright, 22, is a free agent, having mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Greek side Pensarraikos following their relegation from the Greek Super League.

Capped four times by his country, the 6ft 2ins striker has also played for Dutch side Fortuna Sittard, Kristiansund in Norway and New Zealand Knights, where he played alongside former Wolves star Neil Emblen.

Bright played 75 minutes against Tranmere, after just a couple of days of training with the side.

“It was my first game for a while and I was tired after 60 minutes,” he said. “I like the lads, I’ve had two or three training sessions with them.

“It’s been good, but I’ll just have to wait and see.”

Captain Kelvin Langmead gave Town a first-half lead against Tranmere before Alan Mahon equalised.

However, the good performance was soured by injuries to Lewis Neal and Jake Robinson.

Not sure if simmo knows what he wants, one minute he says he’s going to sign experienced loan players from premier league clubs, then he says they will be young players from celtic. Then he goes out and signs a clubless newzealander after half a game

Bit late for all this scratching about to mould a settled promotion hungry squad isn’t it? Have they got a pub league in Patagonia? Could be a tasty centre-forward looking to go up a notch, brick house and a UK passport thrown in.
