AFC Telford 3 Llanelli 0
Monday 3rd August 2009, 9:32AM BST.
AFC Telford United completed an unbeaten pre-season schedule with an impressive triumph over Welsh Premier heavyweights Llanelli AFC.
A second half onslaught gave the Bucks the morale-boosting victory – with goals from Steve Torpey, Andy Brown and Jamie Vermiglio.
Fluent attacking moves and fast passing had the crowd purring – but boss Rob Smith was equally impressed with his sturdy defence.
And the back four – anchored by Jimmy Turner in the absence of the injured Stuart Whitehead – had to withstand early pressure as last season’s Welsh Premier runners-up came out buzzing.
Rhys Griffiths should have put the visitors ahead on 18 minutes after pulling clear of Turner at the back post, but his volley was woefully wide.
United had less of the possession but were always dangerous going forward.
Brown was inches away from connecting with Torpey’s fizzed ball across the wet turf on 20 minutes.
Ryan Young kept Telford level going into half time with a magnificent one-handed saved from Griffiths’ point-blank header.
Telford were the better side after the turnaround and took the lead on 55 minutes from a moment of individual brilliance from Torpey.
The new recruit skipped past five Llanelli players, progressed 15 yards and curled an unstoppable effort into the corner. That strike was worthy of the entrance fee alone from a player who is beginning to show great potential – but there was more to come.
Brown made it 2-0 12 minutes later after latching onto Liam Blakeman’s defence-spitting pass and keeping his nerve with a cool finish.
And substitute Vermiglio wrapped up an excellent afternoon with the third goal on 76 minutes.
The shaven-headed midfielder played in Phil Trainer behind the Llanelli defence, who drew the ‘keeper and returned the ball for Vermiglio to apply the simplest of finishes.
Trainer could have added a fourth with two minutes remaining but blazed over from eight yards after Nolan’s nod down.
