Soggy end for bowlers

Thursday 30th July 2009, 10:16AM BST.

bowls4Rained into submission – both of last night’s scheduled games in the Furrows Shropshire Premier League met with a watery end.

Bylet’s crucial re-arranged basement battle with Bowring was called off a little after 4pm, the Bridgnorth club having earlier cancelled their Mid Shropshire Senior Citizens League clash with division one leaders and champions Sir John Bayley A.

And title-chasing Chester Road had their tussle at the other end of the table with high-flying Ifton washed away by a flooded green in Whitchurch about an hour later.

So it’s as you were in the league, but Bylet have another chance to do their plight at the bottom a power of good tomorrow as they are at home again.

This time though it’s against a Ford side who pulled away from danger with a 13-1 win over Wrockwardine Wood last week.

But Bowring’s worries look set to continue when they make the short trip to take on a St Georges side determined to finish second.

St Georges are 14 points adrift of leaders Castlefields, who also entertain a club from the wrong end of the table tomorrow.

But a home tie with Childs Ercall is not one Fields will take lightly according to skipper Keith Walton.

“We won’t be thinking about the County Cup final, we’ll be going for as many points as we can,” stressed Walton.

“I read what Andy Moss (Chester Road) said in the Star on Tuesday that the league was ours to throw away – and he’s right.

“We know we have one hand on the title and we are eager not to let go of it now.”

Childs Ercall, beaten 10-4 at home by the champions in May, must fear the worst.

So too may Archibald Worthington who are third bottom ahead of what could be a difficult night at Meole.

Newport know they need a decent return at Wrockwardine to keep their heads above water while the Bayley can overtake Wem with a big home win against them.
