More rain on the way
Thursday 30th July 2009, 10:28AM BST.
People in Shropshire and Mid Wales were today bracing themselves for more torrential downpours – making July the wettest for 50 years.
John Warner, Shropshire Star weatherman, said the long-term outlook was also bleak, with August set to be made up of sunshine and showers.
Mr Warner said: “In many places it has been the wettest July for 50 years and in Shropshire we have seen twice as much rainfall as is usual. Sadly, when we have a wet July the trends show us we will have a wet August too, so it is not looking promising.”
He added this weekend would see some sunshine, but it would be blighted with heavy downpours.
“We will see some of the sun on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but this will be hit with torrential rain at times.”
The Tern and Perry catchment area in north Shropshire was today on flood- watch.
And the county’s rivers were full and fast flowing, but there have been no reports of road closures or flash-flooding.
Meanwhile, organisers of a Powys agricultural show have been forced to cancel it for the first time in 254 years because of the weather.
Brecon County Show, which attracts around 10,000 people each year to the town’s showground, was due to be held on Saturday.
It comes after organisers of Dolfor Show, near Newtown, said they had been forced to cancel the event because of similar reasons.
