Man jailed for attacking Pc

Thursday 30th July 2009, 8:00AM BST.

A man who attacked a police officer in Wem has been jailed for four weeks.

Sean Gater, of Swan Mews, Cross Street, Market Drayton, was jailed for 28 days after admitting assaulting a police constable and two charges of resisting police constables.

The 35-year-old was given 28 days’ jail for each offence.

Market Drayton Magistrates Court yesterday heard officers went to Gater’s former home in Wem on November 6 last year to arrest him in connection with another matter.

Gater struggled against Constable Graham Salem and he tried to headbutt Constable Paul Frank, before spitting on his leg while in the police car.

Mr Andrew Holland, for Gater, said his client had just come out of a 17-year relationship and had started drinking and taking drugs.

He said Gater had not been in trouble for a number of years.
