Boxers ringing changes
Thursday 30th July 2009, 10:27AM BST.
Times are changing at Shrewsbury Amateur Boxing Club.
Two young boxers – including one national finalist – are preparing to leave the gym to join the army within the next two weeks.
But two English semi-finalists have already been welcomed to the Smithfield Road gym in preparation for the new season.
The Bowater brothers – Des and Simon – have moved to Shropshire from the Wodensborough gym in Wednesbury in the BlackCountry.
Des reached the last four of the youth ABAs earlier in the year while older brother Simon was a semi-finalist in the novice ABAs.
They join father Ken who gas been a coach at Shrewsbury ABC for more than a year.
But there has been one notable departure from the gym with national novice ABA finalist Robbie Sowdon moving on after two years working alongside head coach Brian Robb.
The Telford-based puncher joins the army next week, but will continue boxing and will still appear on Shrewsbury ABC shows when his commitments in the services allow.
James Powell, who suffered defeat in his opening fight but has since won his last five bouts, is also off to join the army.
