AFC Telford continued their unbeaten pre-season campaign with a 5-0 win over Wellington Amateurs at School Grove.

The annual friendly was a chance for both sides to fine-tune their preparations for the real business of league competition.

For the Bucks, four goals before the break were enough to see off competition from a Wellington side that enjoyed a healthy opening 20 minutes.

Telford were always on top as they continued their unbeaten run, although probing runs from Wellington strikers Danny Hickling and Chris Henry gave early food for thought.

But once Danny Edwards scored from close range on 20 minutes, the result was never in doubt.

The visitors doubled that lead ten minutes later when Tom Field struck from a few yards out as a shot from Danny Carey-Bertram headed goalwards.

But last season’s top scorer can take much of the credit after he capitalised on a defensive slip to steal the ball from goalkeeper Steve Bray just wide of the goalmouth.

Phil Trainer found himself on the scoresheet three minutes later when he headed in from a corner, while Jamie Vermiglio added a fourth just before the break.

But despite the 4-0 scoreline at half time, the first 45 minutes were not without encouragement for Wellington boss Mike Armstrong.

Perhaps their best chance of scoring came on 32 minutes when Danny Hickling rattled the crossbar after beating Ryan Young with a shot from outside the penalty area.

The second half was, in truth, a less eventful affair as both sides appeared to settle for a Telford win.

Danny Carey-Bertram’s strike on 67 minutes was the highlight when he scored with a looping header from close range after a cross from Liam Blakeman.

But of more concern for manager Rob Smith will be the injury to midfielder Scott Embery, who limped off after 18 minutes with an ankle problem.

He will be keenly awaiting the results of tests on Embrey’s injury over the next few days.
