Unpacking in our Canadian home

Tuesday 28th July 2009, 8:14AM BST.

Former Shropshire Star reporter Rebecca Lawrence has moved to Moose Jaw, Canada, with fiance Simon, a pilot in the RAF who has been given a three-year placement with the Canadian Airforce.

Thank goodness, all our stuff arrived in one piece last Friday – except for a broken picture frame.

I’ve spent the last week unpacking many a box and finding the right places to put the contents.

We’ve also cleaned the house from top to bottom and are making it ours. It looks much more homely with our pictures on the walls and lots of photos of friends and family on the shelves.

The weather hasn’t been that great but the sun is beginning to emerge now and it seems to come out at the weekends – which is the best time, I suppose.

We enjoyed a night out at a Scottish/Irish pub called Bobby’s and spent Saturday exploring the shops of Moose Jaw. There is one called Cranberry Rose which actually reminds me of Wysteria Lane in Shrewsbury, as it sells all sorts of beautiful things from jewellery to candles and clothes.

As our kitchen items have now arrived. We enjoyed cooking our own dinner on Saturday night and eating it outside in the sunshine.

On Sunday, we went exploring some of the many tracks of Moose Jaw on our bikes. We also visited Crescent Park, which is a lovely area with a river and waterfall and which houses the beautiful historic library. I have yet to join it though as I still haven’t got anything with my name and address printed on it for identification.

Moose Jaw held a food festival called Motif last weekend and we enjoyed trying out various different foods – especially from the Philippines.

We’ve also been busy watching the television series Bones, which we’ve found we can hire from Blockbusters. We got addicted to the first series after our friends lent us the box set and were thrilled to find series two and three in the video store.

The cinema in Moose Jaw is just like any other. In fact when we went to see Harry Potter on Wednesday night (well worth it), I said to my fiancé we could be anywhere in the world – except the giant drinks and popcorn buckets gave it away a little.

rebecca-lawrenceI’ve also met a few more people. I ventured to a coffee morning at the base on Wednesday and I’ve also volunteered to help at the Moose Jaw Humane Society, which looks after abandoned pets.

On my first day last Thursday I helped mop the floor and gave some of the dogs some fresh water.

At the weekend, we’re planning to go back to Regina to try out a restaurant that’s been recommended to us and we’re also hoping to visit one of the province’s many lakes for a picnic. Let’s hope the sunshine lasts.

This blog is a little pointless and hardly entertaining to read. Unlees you know the girl personally, it means nothing!

So, Pammy, the thought of moving to another country, of settling into life in a different part of the world, is of no interest to you, is it? Says more about you than anyone else, I think.

Speak for yourself Pammy, I don’t know Rebecca but find her reports very interesting. Keep them coming!

Here’s an idea, Pammy. Don’t read it then.

Get as much of the sun as possible, the six month winters really hurt!

Rebecca…. sorry to hear your weather isn’t that great over there, in contrast we have a heatwave here (BC)with 39c today. Associated problems include many wild fires — 345 raging at the moment in BC alone. The air is getting quite smokey around my house and the fire crews are stretched to the limit.
The word homely is usually used to describe a person’s (rather ugly) appearance – quite different to the English meaning of cozy or friendly. But you’ll find many differences in language after a month or two.
Do take that trip to the Rockies… folks back home will likely lap up descriptions of the lakes, mountains and glaciers. I drove through last week saw black bear, moose, mountain goats, big horn sheep etc.

People read stories of peoples travels all the time. They read them because they are interested in travel and living in another country, It has nothing to do with whether they know them or not.
I myself no longer live in Shropshire but I read the Shropshirestar on line every day as I still like to know whats going on back home.

I guess Pammy is must be the sort of person who has no interest in what goes on past her own front door. Nobody has forced her to read this story .
Thankfully most people find the item intersting

I moved to Vancouver last november and love it here. I try to read the shropshirestar online when i can just to check on what’s new back in the region. We are experiencing a heatwave here 33c today in the city. A bit different to the summer back home.
It seems there is more opportunity here and with the winter games around the corner the city is buzzing.. its a great place to be and the scenery is amazing.
